Dancing the night away at The Ukrainian Museum's Malanka 2003
New York Marking it's 4th year as an annual event, the Ukrainian Museum's Malanka which took place this past weekend was nothing less than a spectacular success. The guests were plentiful and exhuberant, the food and wine excellent, the music very danceable, and donations for the Museum's fundraising efforts generous.
The overwhelming response for this year's Malanka caught organizers by surprise and it was fortunate that the Tavern on the Green was able to accomodate most of the demand. Some of those who held off until the deadline for making reservations found themselves on a waiting list for tickets and had to be disappointed in the end. The guest list was capped at 318.
Interest in this occasion which has risen significantly since its inception four years ago is largely attributed to careful planning by the Museum's Special Events Committee but is also paralleled by recent progress in the construction of the new facility in Manhattan. Now that the Museum's Malanka has firmly established itself as the leading event among all others in the Ukrainian community, the Committee which is chaired by Tatiana Tershakovec will be seeking ways to improve upon its past success. Olha Hnateyko, President of the Museum's Board of Trustees, vowed to have more comfortable accomodations for next year's ball. With construction of the new Museum building expected to be completed or near completion by that time, the show of support at the next Malanka is bound to reach record levels again.
