New York, December 18 At a special press conference today called for ethnic media, Governor Pataki expressed his appreciation for the contributions made to New York City and State by immigrant communities. Mr. Pataki recalled his own experiences at home when his father read the Hungarian newspaper, recognizing that the job of the ethnic media for conveying news to its community as a critical one. Underscoring the theme of the press conference and a little holiday spirit, the reception prepared for the media guests included a wide variety of ethnic foods, each provided by a different caterer.
The City of New York is facing the arduous task of rebuilding and revitalizing business interests in order to recover lost revenues since 9/11. Mr. Pataki wants to get the message out that "when New Yorkers stand together, we can accomplish anything."
The Governor praised the seven proposals for the World Trade Center site that were unveiled today. Although Mr. Pataki favored 3 or 4 of them in particular, he will not say which, and hopes that all New Yorkers actively participate in the selection process.
After his statement, the Governor spotted Orysia Woloszyn in the crowd and gave her a hug. Ms. Woloszyn is Program Manager for the International Division of the New York State Department of Economic Development. Mr. Pataki fondly recollected Zenia Mucha, formerly a senior policy advisor to the Governor, and commented "New York is blessed with such a strong Ukrainian American community".
