Bad Touch is an exhibit of recent drawings of 60 international artists who circumvent traditional style and challenge the fundamental notion of drawing. Curated by Bill Thelen, of Raleigh, N.C., "Bad Touch" features artists from around the nation and the world, including ten residing in Chicago. It brings together an abundance of styles, processes, and viewpoints, with the artist's hand providing the work with a physicality and humanity that reveals much more than simple content and form.
Each artist brings his or her own rules to the table, from seemingly unconscious doodles to drawings wrung from commercial culture, or delicate renderings of everyday situations with a surreal twist. Artists from Germany, Japan, Spain, Denmark, and Canada, are represented along with artists from Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Miami.
Chicago artists Vincent Dermody, Andreas Fischer, Katy Fischer, Deva Maitland, Rick Mallette, Paul Nudd, Joel Ross, William Staples, Kyrie Voltair, and Scott Wolniak are participating in the exhibit, which has been shown in Raleigh, N.C. and Philadelphia. Bad Touch is slated for future stops in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Berlin.
An opening reception will be held Friday, December 13, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Institute is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
