Groundbreaking Documentary about Ukraine in WWII Released
“Studio 1+1,” the largest commercial broadcast channel in Ukraine, recently released the last four 30-minute episodes of the nine-part documentary series “War. The Ukrainian Toll.” (“Viyna. Ukrayinskiy rakhunok.”) The project was directed by Serhiy Bukovsky, a renowned Ukrainian documentary film director whose films received top awards at numerous film festivals around the world.
The series tells the story of World War II from the perspective of Ukraine and the losses it suffered. The last four episodes, which premiered in Kyiv on November 4 at the Ukrainian Cinematography Center, cover the activities of the Ukrainian Rebel Army (UPA), “Halychyna” division and the tragic events that were taking place in the Ukraine throughout the war and into the late 1950s.
What makes this project so unique is that never before in the history of Ukrainian documentary cinema has the subject of the national independence movement in the context of the war been explored with such depth and vigor.

Serhiy Bukovsky (b. 1960) is a renowned Ukrainian documentary film director whose films received top awards at international film festivals, including Amsterdam (the Netherlands), Neon (Switzerland), Krakow (Poland), Leipzig (Germany), etc.
1982: graduated from the Kyiv Art Institute named after Karpenko-Karyj, Film Direction Department
1982-1995: Film Director of the National Studio of Documentary Films, Kyiv
1995-1998: Head of the Television Department of Internews Network, Kyiv
1998-present: Independent film director
