69th Observance of Ukrainian Famine-Genocide to be held at St. Patrick's Cathedral

New York, NY (UCCA) — The now-traditional annual commemorative observance of the Ukrainian Famine -Genocide will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. Sponsored by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the observance begins at 2 p.m. and will consist of an ecumenical memorial service (panakhyda) co-celebrated by the hierarchy of the Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Patriarch Lubomyr Husar of the Ukrainian Catholic Church (confirmed) along with Bishop Basil Losten of the Ukrainian Catholic Church (confirmed) and Archbishop Anthony of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (invited) will be the main co-celebrants. The "Dumka" choir (confirmed) will sing responses to the memorial service. The main speakers will be His Excellency Patriarch Lubomyr Husar and Rabbi David Lincoln, Chief Rabbi of the Park Avenue Temple.

Following the religious service, representatives from the American and Ukrainian governments will be afforded an opportunity to offer their remarks. Invited guest speakers include the Honorable George Pataki, Governor of the State of New York; the Honorable Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City; and the Honorable Kostyantyn Hryshchenko, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary ambassador of Ukraine to the United States. The UCCA has appealed to President Bush to offer a statement regarding the 69th anniversary of the Ukrainian famine that would be read at the commemoration. Likewise, the states of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut have been requested to issue official proclamations from their governors commemorating the day.

The day's commemorative events will culminate with a press conference at 4pm at the UCCA Headquarters at 203 Second Avenue in lower Manhattan. The press conference will present plans of the Ukrainian community to build a monument to the victims of the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide in Washington, DC by the year 2008, the Famine's 75th anniversary. Participating in the press conference will be hierarchy of the Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox Churches, representatives from the Ukrainian government, sponsors of the Ukrainian Famine Memorial bill in Congress, and representatives from the Ukrainian World Congress and the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.

The entire Ukrainian American community of the greater New York metropolitan area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) is invited to participate in this ecumenical observance of the 69th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide.
