Strategies for Economic Development to Prevent Trafficking of Ukraine's Women, Men and Children
International Conference to Review Economic Solutions to Trafficking
Kyiv U.S. Ambassador Carlos Pascual and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)/Ukraine Mission Director Christopher D. Crowley will open a regional conference, "Prevention of trafficking in persons: economic causes and solutions," in Kyiv on October 21-22, 2002, which is expected to include over 150 representatives from the Ukrainian government, media, and local and international organizations.
The conference is funded by USAID and co-organized by the Academy for Educational Development, the International Women's Rights Center: La Strada-Ukraine, Ukraine's State Committee for Family and Youth of Ukraine, and other members of the Anti-Trafficking Task force. It will review various strategies to combat trafficking such as expanding local economic opportunities; compare regional approaches to the problem; and explore the role of small business development and the third sector in job creation. The focus will primarily be on the economic roots of the problem and domestic alternatives to illegal labor migration. Conference results are expected to include a blueprint for future policies that would create more economic opportunities for citizens at risk. Participants will include keynote speeches from senior representatives of the Government of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada, the Ombudswoman's office, representatives of regional NGOs, businesses, law enforcement agencies, and dignitaries from foreign embassies.
