Requiem 2002: Small but determined NYC group joins international protest action

A small but determined group of protesters in New York City joined the international action "Requiem 2002: Face the Truth", a tribute to murdered Ukrainian journalist, Heorhiy Gongadze with the aim of bringing attention to the lack of freedoms in Ukrainian media. Simultaneous protests were held in Washington DC and Prague (see www.gongadze.org). The actions taking place outside Ukraine coincided with mass demonstrations in Kyiv and other cities, that were part of nationwide protests lead by the opposition to unseat the president. According to reports from Ukraine, TV and some radio broadcasts were disrupted for unscheduled 'maintenance', and many Internet news sites were taken off-line during the demonstrations.

The New York event was lead by Ukrainian-American Yurko Pylyp. Studying in Kyiv this past summer, it was Mr. Pylyp's experiences there that led to his resolve to work against the corrupt elements in Ukraine.
