Gogol Bordello Launches First North American Tour; “Multi Kontra Culti Vs. Irony” In Stores Sept. 17
“On Multi Kontra Culti” the music roars out of the speakers and churns around you like a Slavic hurricane.” Pulse Magazine "Gogol Bordello has become an underground phenomenon in New York with its brand of contrarian globalism...their sound is raucous, sweaty, tuneful and recklessly vibrant, like the punk and Gypsy music that inspired them. Iggy Pop meets Kafka." The New York Times |

New York, NY (September 15, 2002) Get ready America! New York’s critically acclaimed underground gypsy punk rockers Gogol Bordello are launching their first North American tour. Kicking off in New York on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22 with two nights at the Knitting Factory, Gogol Bordello will travel to over 20 cities nationwide including Cleveland, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New Orleans to name a few.
With influences ranging from Béla Bartók to Sonic Youth, Gogol Bordello is seeped in Gypsy culture with a post-modern punk edge. Their live performances have garnered them national attention ranging from Charlie Rose to NPR to an invitation to perform at this year’s 2002 Biennial, The Whitney Museum’s signature exhibition. Already critically heralded by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and BOMB Magazine, Gogol Bordello will release their new album “Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony” on Sept. 17.
Gogol Bordello is the brainchild of Ukrainian singer/lyricist/visionary Eugene Hutz who uses the term “New York Gypsy Punk Cabaret” to describe their singular sound. The band also features musicians Sergey Ryabtsev (violin), Oren Kaplan (guitar), Yuri Lemeshev (accordian), Ori Kaplan (sax), Eliot “the lone American” Ferguson (drums) as well as Susan Donaldson and Pam Racine (The Gogol Dance Troop).
Gogol Bordello often spin macabre tales of the immigrant experience involving Ukrainian folklore or bizarre erotic dreamscapes that can be as absurd as anecdotes about a gang of supernatural immigrant vampires or a backyard BBQ with Stalin. Hutz, who cut his teeth on bands such as The Birthday Party and Einstürzende Neubauten, writhes Iggy Pop-style over Gogol Bordello’s lilting rhythms and rich blend of musical styles. Often an entire evenings concert will be based loosely on telling one overall story through many songs. Combining elements of traditional Ukranian sounds with storytelling, elaborate props, and complex stage sets, Gogol Bordello relays aspects of many recent diasporic realities and creates for us all a uniquely infectious spectacle that offers up nothing short of a new, free-for-all theater of anarchy. These show are not to be missed!
