BRAMA, March 11, 2002, 1 am ET

New York — Representatives from the World Federation of Ukrainian Womens' Organizations and Soyuz Ukrayinok (Ukraine) are in New York City attending the forty-sixth session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. Selected topics are discussed at meetings conducted at this time every year by NGO's from around the world. This year's Session (4-15 March 2002) is primarily concerned with:
  1. Eradicating poverty, including through the empowerment of women throughout their life cycle in a globalizing world; and
  2. Environmental management and mitigation of natural disasters: a gender perspective.
Many of the meetings taking place during this session have been focussed on the plight of Afghan women as victims in the current crisis.
