Press Release

Ukrainian Gold Cross Appeal for Iryna Senyk

Washington, D.C. — It is with shock, disbelief and great sadness that we have learned of the vicious attack on Iryna Senyk in Ukraine on February 26 in Boryslav. Ms. Senyk is a "national treasure"—a poet, former political prisoner and exilee, religious and human rights activist, and embroidery artist. She was attacked shortly after she delivered brief remarks in favor of "Our Ukraine," the election bloc of reformist Victor Yushchenko, former prime minister of Ukraine.

Organizations and parishes might want to show their support by sending petitions protesting this criminal outrage to the Embassy of Ukraine in the U.S. to be forwarded to President Kuchma, to the law enforcement authorities of the Lviv Oblast and to the municipality of Boryslav. A sample petition might be sent as follows:

TO: President Leonid Kuchma, Executive Office of the President of Ukraine; and Heads of the Lviv Oblast Administration and the Municipality of Boryslav.
VIA: His Excellency Kostantyn Hryshchenko
Embassy of Ukraine
3350 M Street, NW
Washington, DC 20007
We, the undersigned friends of democratic governance in Ukraine, appeal to you to use every appropriate legal means to bring to justice those responsible for the brutal attack on Iryna Senyk on February 26, 2002, and to ensure that Ukraine's citizens may freely express their views and openly support the candidates of their choice without fear of violence. This terrible event that has been visited upon Ms. Senyk brings shame on Ukrainians everywhere.

The Metropolitan Washington chapter continues the mandate of the Ukrainian Gold Cross to render relief assistance and support to Ukrainian dissidents, journalists, and activists and their families who fall victim in Ukraine to repression, persecution, and criminal action.

Anyone wishing to render financial assistance to the Senyk family may do so via a tax-deductible contribution made by check or money order to "Ukrainian Gold Cross, Inc." mailed to Ukrainian Gold Cross, c/o N. Gawdiak, 700 Winhall Way, Silver Spring, MD, 20904. Please mark "Senyk Fund" on donations.
