U.S.-Ukraine Foundation Introduces New Program to Assist Legal Sector in Ukraine
Washington, October 2001 The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation (USUF) announces a new project, Assisting the Legal Sector in Ukraine, and seeks the participation of U.S. legal professionals.
USUF aims to support the legal professionals and students in Ukraine as they learn to function in a rule of law democracy. In their need for assistance to keep up with Ukraine’s legislative reforms, Ukrainian legal professionals and students have solicited USUF for support. The type of requested assistance includes short term exchange programs between U.S. and Ukrainian law professors, the publication of Ukrainian legal textbooks, NGO organizational support, such as developing legal websites, and funding for students to purchase legal textbooks.
USUF intends that these needs will be addressed through the Assisting the Legal Sector in Ukraine project and through the support and participation of U.S. legal professionals.
USUF plans to set up an advisory board for the project and invites legal professionals and organizations interested in Ukraine’s legal reforms to volunteer and join the board. The Foundation will work with board members on designing the project’s scope and developing funding support. Much of the advisory work is planned to be done via email communication. USUF also welcomes suggestions on the project’s design or sources of funding.
USUF is a not-for-profit nongovernmental organization established in 1991 to facilitate democratic development, encourage free market reform and enhance human rights in Ukraine. Over the past several years, USUF has supported Ukraine’s legal sector through the project, Integrating the Constitutional Court of Ukraine into Civil Society. Funded by the United States Information Agency and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the project promoted awareness and understanding of the new Constitution of Ukraine and the Constitutional Court among the Ukrainian population.
The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation encourages parties interested in participating in this new project to contact Motrya Mac, Manager of Administration at motrya@usukraine.org. USUF is located at 733 15th Street, NW, Suite 1026, Washington, DC 20002. (Tel.: 202-347-4264, Fax: 202-347-4267, Email)
