Odessa Regional Children’s Hospital
to open newly renovated Infant Intensive Care Unit
in honor of Viktor Petrenko

Odessa, Ukraine - On Monday 22, 2001 at 11 am, the Odessa Regional Children’s Hospital will host a press conference announcing the official opening of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which was renovated and equipped due to the Viktor Petrenko initiative. Ukraine Olimpic and World Champion Viktor Petrenko will attend the press conference and will tour the newly renovated facility that now contains state-of-the-art technology delivered by the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (USA).

The modernization of the Odessa Neonatal ICU was made possible by a gala fundraiser that was held last March in Simsbury, Connecticut featuring Viktor Petrenko and an all-star cast of international skating stars, including Brian Boitano, Sasha Cohen, Viacheslav Zagorodnyuk, Phillippe Candeloro, and Lucida Ruh. Entitled "Viktory for Kids" the event raised over $100,000 dollars in proceeds for the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund (CCRF). The funds were then used to purchase neonatal respirators, infant warmers, cardiac monitors, incubators and other essential equipment needed for the treatment of children suffering from respiratory distress, birth defects and other life-threatening conditions.

CCRF is an award-winning charity based in the United States that has completed 28 airlifts and 9 sea shipments to Ukraine. It has been a leader in the campaign to combat infant mortality in Ukraine, and to help save the lives of children who are still being affected by radioactive fallout from the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chornobyl, as well as other environmental hazards. This is the seventh neonatal Intensive Care Unit established by CCRF in Ukraine. Similar units in Lutsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Poltava have helped local hospitals in those cities to reduce infant mortality by as much as 46% to 80%.

The Odessa Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital is located at #3 Academic Vorobiov Street in Odessa. For further information, please contact Ms. Olena Maslyukivska, Country Director for CCRF in Kyiv (044)228-1870; or Dr. Oleksandr Liman, the Chief Doctor at the Odessa Children’s Hospital at (0489) 23-12-45.
