September 12, 2001 - Union Square has become a mecca for New Yorkers who wish to
find ways of expressing their shock and grief over the tragic events that rocked
this city yesterday. A candle, a symbolic offering made from some type of cement or spackle compound, was
constructed next to the statue of George Washington. At the base of the "candle"
is an announcement about a candlelight vigil to be held this evening at
Washington Square Park.
The candle
was sculpted by immigrants to this country: Ukrainian Oleksandr Zalizniak along with Armenian ?.Sarkesian.
