URGENT MESSAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Given the travesty of yesterday's terrorist bombings, several things are being cancelled (or at least postponed) here in Washington, DC.

First of all, the premiere screening of "The Undefeated," which was to take place on Tuesday, September 18, 2001 in Loew's Theater in Dupont Circle is POSTPONED!

Secondly, the congressional gala banquet for Wednesday evening, September 19, 2001 is also being called off (not known whether we will rescheudle the event). That decision will be made in the next several days and I will keep you informed.

Furthermore, the UCCA Executive Board meeting for saturady, September 15 is being postponed to a future date in October, and the internet chat, scheduled for today, is also being postponed for a future date.

Congressional Banquet to Commemorate 10th Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence

Washington, D.C. (UNIS) - The Capitol Hill commemoration of Ukrainian Independence Day is an important tradition in Washington that has a greater meaning on this the Tenth Anniversary of the August 24th Declaration of Ukrainian Independence. To appropriately commemorate this momentous occasion in our nation’s capital, Washington, DC, Ukrainian organizations have collaborated their efforts to establish a steering committee entitled "The Committee to Commemorate Ukraine’s 10th Anniversary of Independence." The Congressional banquet will provide a forum for Members of Congress to express their solidarity with the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian-American community. This year’s special congressional observance falls in between two major Ukrainian conferences in Washington, DC. The first, a two-day conference, entitled "US-Ukraine Community Partnership Project," will be held in Congress begin Thursday, September 13, 2001. The second conference, entitled "Ukraine’s Quest for Mature Nation Statehood – Roundtable II: Taking Measure of a U.S.-Ukraine Strategic Partnership," will be held in Washington, D.C. on September 20-21, 2001 [see conference-related Press Release].

In observance of the 10th Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence, a special Congressional Banquet will be held on Capitol Hill on Wednesday evening, September 19, 2000 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. Sponsored by "The Committee to Commemorate Ukraine’s 10th Anniversary of Independence," the evening event will be held in the Hart Senate Office Building, Room 216, 2nd and C Streets, NE. Formal eveningwear is requested, though considered optional. Nearly 40 Senators and Representatives, Ukrainian Hierarchy, and members of the diplomatic corps have endorsed the Congressional Banquet by serving as Members of the Honorary Committee of the event.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the congressional banquet will feature a cocktail hour, with a cash bar, following which the official program will begin promptly at 7 p.m. Vice President Richard Cheney and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoli Zlenko have been invited to provide the keynote addresses. Likewise, Members of Congress will be afforded the opportunity to provide their remarks regarding the jubilee. A cultural program will also entertain the honored guests of members of the community. The hierarchies of the Ukrainian Churches (Catholic, Orthodox, and Baptist-Evangelical) have been invited to participate, along with leaders of Ukrainian-American organizations. The participation of the entire Ukrainian-American community is of utmost importance in order to convey the appreciation of the community to the Members of Congress who will join in the celebration of Ukraine’s 10th Anniversary of Independence.

The cost of the congressional banquet is $100. Space for the banquet is limited to seating for 175 individuals, thus guests of the banquet will be registered on a first-come, first-serve basis. RSVP for the event is Monday, September 10, 2001 (no exceptions). Further details will be provided by "The Committee to Commemorate Ukraine’s 10th Anniversary of Independence" in the near future.
