Ukrainians make their mark in Catskill History (Lexington and Hunter, NY)
Exerpted from the minutes of the Lexington Historical Society Annual Meeting (May, 2001)
[ … ] A most delightful part of our May meeting was our guest speaker, Liuba Wolynec [Lubow Wolynetz], Curator of the Ukrainian Diocese Museum in Stamford, Connecticut, but no stranger to the Ukrainian community in our Catskill mountaintop. Ms. Wolynec created a beautiful and clear picture of the beginnings and the development of the Ukrainian community here: how the similarities between the Carpathia Mountain range in the Ukraine and this area of the Catskills greatly influenced the development of their heritage; and, the facts and circumstances that led to the building of the beautiful St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, the building of the Grazda, and the development of all the activities associated with these buildings and with the Ukrainian community. Ms. Wolynec’s concluding remarks will surely be inspiration for continuing interest in the communities within our community, for she stated that it is not a melting-pot mind set that is at work here, but a mosaic work, where we all find our place and see each other clearly in a beautifully developing community bound picture. We are grateful to Luiba for this very special presentation of the history of our Ukrainian community.
