ACTION ALERT
Urgent action is needed to persuade the U.S. Congress to restore the proposed cuts by the House Subcommittee on Foreign Operations in the Foreign Appropriation Bill for U.S. aid to Ukraine. The Subcommittee cut the aid to $125 million down from the $169 million requested by the administration. The matter will now be taken up by the Senate. Please call Subcommittee Chair Senator Patrick Leahy's office at (202) 224-4242 to urge that his Subcommittee on Foreign Operations restore aid to Ukraine to the full amount requested by the President. The reasons given for the $44 million cut were three; the House felt It should be noted, however, that Myroslava Gongadze, the wife of slain dissident journalist Georgiy Gongadze, feels it would be a grave mistake for the United States to cut aid to Ukraine and has expressed these feeling to Members of Congress. Aid needs to go to grass roots level organizations, NGO's, and local democratic entities. Let the Senate earmark funds if they want to, but a cut will only punish the people and not hurt the Ukrainian administration. Please write, fax, call and/or email the Members of the full Senate Appropriations Committee. For a list of these Senators, see: http://www.senate.gov/committees. Please also call your own Senator. For telephone numbers to both the Senate and House, call (202) 224-3121. Ihor Gawdiak, President
Bohdan Korzeniowski, President
