Cooper Union-approved Astor Hotel model on display

The New York Times (5/10/01) said it "will resemble a gigantic pair of slacks with assymetrical legs cut from shimmering confetti-patterned fabric." A "flaring garment" and a "patchwork" of garment designers.

One neighborhood resident sees "sculpted swiss cheese," while another thought it could be a "lampshade from the Flintstones."

Invitation from Cooper Union

A model of the design for the new Astor Hotel will be on view this week in the first floor lobby of The Cooper Union Foundation Building. Developed by hotelier Ian Schrager, the hotel is designed by Pritzker Prize- winning architects Rem Koolhaas of OMA/Rem Koolhaas of Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Jacques Herzog of Herzog & de Meuron of Basel, Switzerland.

The model can be seen from Monday, May 14th until the afternoon of Monday, May 21st. Viewing hours are from 8 am until 10 pm, except on May 21st when the model will be on view until 3 pm.

The building entrance is on the south side of the building on Cooper Square, which is also 7th Street between Third and Fourth Avenues.

The Shevchenko Preservation Committee together with the Committee to Save the East Village urges every New Yorker to take advantage of this small window of opportunity being offered by the Cooper Union to view the model. The community organizations ask that visitors keep in mind that the street layout and building arrangements in the model are designed as they exist today, rather than showing the extensive Cooper Union large-scale development plans. The proposed plans include construction of other tall buildings in the immediate area, as well as narrowing down and demapping steets.
