Alexander Fedoriouk Releases New Solo Album
(Cleveland) - Folk Sounds Records presents a new release by Alexander Fedoriouk Cimbalom Traditions. This recording presents the traditional folk music of Eastern Europe. The works selected reflect the varied cultures of this region: Romanian, Ukrainian, Slovak, Rusyn, Moldavian and Gypsy. Performed on authentic folk instruments, the music is drawn from both urban and rural traditions. Featured on the album are the fantastic talents of: Walt Mahovlich on accordion and clarinet; Marko Dreher on violin and viola; Andrei Pidkivka on sopilka, nai, tylynka and fujara; Gheorghe Trambitas on taragot and saxophone; Paul Morrisett on bass. Special guests include: Vasyl Heker on violin and Catalin Petrescu on bass.
Alexander Fedoriouk began playing the cimbalom at the age of 7 in Kolomyia, Ukraine. He studied music with Mykola Kovstuniak at the Kolomyia Music School, Mykola Scherban at the Chernivtsy Musical COllege and Georgy Agratina, National Artist of Ukraine, at the Kyiv State Conservatory. In Ukraine he has received awards at the national competition on folk instruments in 1988 and 1991, and has appeared in the musical movies Namysto Dlya Berehyni and Pisne Kalynova. Here in the United States, he has performed with the Duquesne University Tamburitzans and currently performs with the Ukrainian ensemble, Cheres, and the Eastern European folk ensemble, Harmonia. Aside from his phenomenal performances in the folk genres, Fedoriouk has done extensive performances in classical, avant garde and jazz genres of music as well.
In the classical arena, Alexander Fedoriouk has performed on cimbalom with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, the Canton Symphony Orchestra and the Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra. In the jazz circle, he has recorded with Herbie Mann and Sonna Terra appearing on his newest album Eastern European Roots. Fedoriouk has also performed at the Blue Note in New York City with Mann. Since his time in the U.S., Fedoriouk has appeared on 17 recordings which have included collaborations with Nigel Pulsford of Bush and Erik Friedlander and Topaz. He has performed with John Cale of the Velvet Underground in Carnegie Hall, and has also performed in the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York City, City Hall in New York City, Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.
