"Magic Space In-Between" Medium: acrylic, oil on canvas Size: 40" x 30" Date of completion: 2000 |
Studio Montclair, Inc. and the Montclair Public Library will present a lecture and exhibition by Summit artist, Alexandra Isaievych, for the Meet the Artist series titled "Magic Space In-Between: Works on Canvas and Paper". The opening reception is Friday, May 4, 2001 at the library from 6 - 8 p.m. with a slide presentation by the artist at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. This event is free to the public. The exhibit continues until May 26, 2001.
In her paintings, Isaievych combines two seemingly different worlds. Spontaneous and colorful textures, marks, and drips energize her canvases upon which translucent, carefully outlined figures are superimposed. The figures in the paintings find themselves in a magic space created by flowing currents and energy waves. The formal juxtaposition of randomness and order creates a vibrant and harmonious whole, attempting to reconcile the inherent conflict between the rational mentality of our world and the visionary logic of the dreamworld.
Ms. Isaievych was born in Lviv, Ukraine. She graduated from the Ivan Trush College of Applied Arts in Lviv and continued her art education at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Tufts University, receiving her bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in 1992. She has exhibited in solo shows in the Treasure Room Gallery at the Interchurch Center in New York City, the Bernstein Gallery of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, and at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and Harvard Law School. Her group shows include Gallery 214 in Montclair, NJ, the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts in Summit, NJ, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Selected works by the artist can be found on the internet at: http://members.home.net/aisaiev/
The library is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 - 9 p.m., Tuesday 10 - 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 - 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 - 5 p.m. For further information call Sharon Douglas at the library: 973 744-0500 ext. 224
