Cooper Union representative denies plans to remove the name "Taras Shevchenko Place"
New York - In a telephone conversation today, Claire McCarthy, a representative of the Office of External Affairs at Cooper Union, stated that the proposal to "demap" Taras Shevchenko Place in the East Village neighborhood does not include plans for removing the name.
"Demapping," defined by the City of New York Manhattan Community Board, means the street will be removed not only as a vehicular passageway, but it will also be removed from official city maps.
According to Ms. McCarthy, the plans which currently include conversion of the street to a pedestrian walkway, will eventually lead to building a new academic facility for the university. The Hewitt Building which occupies the full block bounded by Taras Shevchenko Place, 6th St, 3rd Ave. and 7th St., would be razed by Cooper Union in order to construct the new facility. According to Ms. McCarthy, there are no plans to remove the pedestrian walk in the future. She said that the demapping approval is necessary in order for plans for construction of the new building to proceed.
"The name Taras Shevchenko Place," Ms. McCarthy said, "can still be used for the pedestrian walkway." She stressed that the pedestrian walk will make a positive contribution to the neighborhood. Ms. McCarthy was unable to offer a guarantee that the name or the property uses would not change in the future.
Prior to making the proposal to the Board No. 3 Housing Committee, the Cooper Union Office of External Affairs has held as many as 15 meetings with community leaders and organizations that it felt represented the neighborhood affected by the proposal. Meetings have already taken place with the 6th and 7th Street block associations, Community Board 3, the Housing Committee, Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, Community Board 2, NoHo Neighborhood Association, and various public officials.

Ms. McCarthy added that Cooper Union has the support of St. George Church officials. The St. George church and school buildings abut the east side of Taras Shevchenko Place.
