Kyiv, Ukraine - March 9 in Kyiv, the day when the great poet Taras Shevchenko is honored by Ukrainians the world over, was the scene of one of the largest organized protest actions to date against President Kuchma. Crowds gathered at the statue of Shevchenko that stands facing the State University (a.k.a. the "Red Building") to pay tribute to his memory around noon on Friday. Those who joined the protest later moved from the monument grounds to march along Khreshchatyk Boulevard. Violence broke out afterwards between the militant UNA-UNSO party members and local police. |
