The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is pleased to present Loyal to the Line, an exhibition of recent work by Viennese artist Roxane Legenstein. UIMA is the third venue to present this work previously on view in Ukraine at the Art Palace in Lviv and the Art-Centre in Kostjol'nastreet, Kyiv. It has been organized in cooperation with the Austrian American Council. A catalogue is available in English, German and Ukrainian with essays by Tamara Li and herbert j. wimmer.

In this, her first exhibition in the United States, Roxane Legenstein examines the sensory experience of space and how the viewer perceives borders. The two bodies of work on view, "Linientreue - Those Loyal to the Line" and "Draussen im Raum - Outside in Space," utilize mixed technique, clay, iron and cardboard to produce enigmatic forms suggesting human figures in compressed space. These forms exist within their own reality, as subjective as the one we inhabit, possessed of its own rules and conditions. Legenstein suggests that the boundaries we perceive are often drawn by others, and our understanding is as limited as that of the inhabitants of Plato's Cave.

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA), a not for profit arts organization, was founded in 1971. For 30 years UIMA has served the local community and greater Chicago area with a program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and multi-disciplinary events. The programs presented by UIMA are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

Upcoming: Significant/Signifiers, a group show curated by Tom Palazzolo pairing work by artists who share a relationship, on view March 4th through April 17th.
