Outrage over Ukrainian Church & "Bates motel"
comparison in Washington Post
Mr. Leonard Downie Jr., Executive Editor
Mr. Downie, In your Sunday "Insider's Column" [12/24, Style, p. F3] I was outraged to see a comparison between a holy place of worship and the tacky "Bates motel" from the movie "Psycho." Reporter Josh Gibson starts out by promising your readers an article about the "diversity of this religious architecture" found on New Hampshire Avenue. Instead, after referencing several of the places of worship found along that road, he has the audacity to desecrate the revered Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church by attempting to compare it to the "Bates motel" featured in "Psycho." Nothing could be farther from the truth. The non-existent, Hollywood-created "Bates motel" was a rundown and decrepit figment of Alfred Hitchcock's imagination. The Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, with its unique hand-crafted wood carving reflecting the ancient Hutzul (Carpathian) mountain region folk church design of Western Ukraine, is a very holy place for many area Ukrainian-Americans. If anything, historical comparisons dating back the past 2,000 years would have been appropriate. Regards,
