"Ukraine Without Kuchma" protest action gains momentum

KYIV - Studio 1+1 estimates that a crowd of 3000 took part in an escalated protest against President Kuchma today. Starting with one hundred or so participants late Friday, December 15, the numbers of demonstrators in the tent encampment on Maidan Nezalezhnist grew to several hundred by Sunday. Thousands joined them for today's organized march towards the Parliament building.

According to www.ukrop.com some of the protesters broke through police ranks and made their way into Parliament. Demonstrators are demanding the resignations of the Minister of the Interior Yuriy Kravchenko, head of Sluzhba Bezpeky Ukrainy (Security Service of Ukraine) Leonid Derkach, and President Leonid Kuchma.

An opposition protest in support of President Kuchma took place yesterday at Maidan Nezalezhnist. Demands by this group center around dismissal of Parliament for having conducted an investigation into the disappearance of journalist Heorhiy Gongadze in which Kuchma himself has been implicated.

President Kuchma is reportedly in Lviv today attending funeral services for the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Cardinal Myroslav Lubachivsky, who died last week.
