Kuchma supporters make a stand at Maidan Nezalezhnist' KYIV - Denizens of the unmarked tents that had been pitched yesterday on Maidan Nezalezhnist took action today in a show of support for the President, countering the anti-Kuchma rally that took place over the weekend. Sporting several large white banners with painted red lettering, the demonstrators demanded that Parliament be disbanded and brought before the courts. The slogans directed against Parliament are in response to a Parliamentary criminal investigation into the mysterious disappearance and possible murder of journalist Heorhiy Gongadze. President Kuchma has been accused of complicity in the attempt to silence Gongadze because of his highly critical view of the government. A tape recording of a damaging conversation said to contain Kuchma's voice was recently released by Socialist Party leader Oleksandr Moroz as evidence against the President. Kuchma has denied the accusation, and prosecutors have been unable to authenticate the recording. For the report and images from the earlier demonstration, [CLICK HERE]. |
