Prominent hi-tech entrepeneur Eugene Shklar and wife Daymel become Ukrainian Museum angels

NEW YORK - The stunning announcement about a 3.5 million dollar gift granted by Eugene and Daymel Shklar to The Ukrainian Museum was made at a press conference last night. The grant is comprised of two components: 2.5 million awarded directly to the Museum, and an additional 1 million earmarked as a challenge grant that will match dollar for dollar contributions to the Museum received before the end of 2001.

The generous gift was enthusiastically applauded and gratefully received by Museum staff, supporters, and benefactors who have worked tirelessly at fundraising efforts since the project was originally proposed in 1991. To date, the Museum has amassed 3.5 million. Augmented by tbe Shklar grant, the total matches the estimated amount needed to complete construction of the new Museum building by spring 2002.

Unpretentious and sincere in their desire to benefit the Ukrainian community in a substantive way, the Shklars shy away from the type of publicity and fanfare donations such as this one would normally engender. Addressing a group of local correspondents, Museum Board and staff members, as well as other benefactors, Eugene Shklar spoke reservedly about the impressive grant. The Canadian-born engineer, who is of Ukrainian ancestry, together with his wife recently established the Eugene and Daymel Shklar Foundation as a means to support select deserving projects in Ukraine, Puerto Rico and other parts of the world. Wishing to commemorate the memory of those who suffered the ravages of war and escaped to the safety of the West to build a new life, the Shklars underscore their appreciation for Ukrainian culture and the arts in general by their donation to the Museum. Mr. Shklar, who spoke in Ukrainian and English, emphasized the Museum's "noble mission" as a "showcase for [Ukrainian] achievements to the rest of the world". His speech is included below in both languages.

Daymel and I are grateful for this opportunity, with our gifts, to honor my parents for their courage in dodging bullets and cannon shells over 50 years ago in war-torn Ukraine in the pursuit of their vision of establishing a new life of liberty and opportunity on this side of the Atlantic.

Our gifts also honor the founders, benefactors, trustees, and staff of this Museum. They've built a marvelous institution that not only helps preserve and interpret the artistic achievements of our Ukrainian culture for us of Ukrainian heritage. but also proudly showcases these achievements to the rest of the world.

Now, as the Ukrainian Museum prepares to execute its plan to relocate from these rented quarters into its own, larger home, Daymel and I hope that our gifts will strengthen the Museum and will encourage others to step forward with their own contributions of time or capital, in order to ensure that this institution can survive all of us and continue its noble mission for all time.
