Свято Покрови, яке на Україні відзначають 14 жовтня вже впродовж тисячі років,традиційно вважається також Днем українського козацтва. Цього року громадська, оборонно-спортивна організація Українське Козацтво відзначила не лише традиційне православне свято, але й 10-ту річницю відродження козацького руху.

Сонячного, але прохолодного ранку сотні козаків з усіх регіонів України зібралися біля пам"ятника Тарасові Шевченку, аби віддати шану не лише видатному українському поетові, але й харизматичній історичній постаті. Пізніше козацькі сотні вирушили вулицями Києва до пам"ятників Грушевському та Хмельницькому, та взяли участь в урочистій відправі у Михайлівському соборі.

Головні святкування, проте, відбулися в Українському Домі, де козацьких посланців привітав Гетьман Українського Козацтва Іван Білас, а найкращим з них було вручено козацькі відзнаки та нагороди. Серед відзначених козацькими нагородами та найвищими козацькими званнями, були Президент України Леонід Кучма та прем"єр-міністр Віктор Ющенко. Президента України також було проголошено Почесним Гетьманом Українського Козацтва.

Невелике затьмарення свята сталося, коли на спільну молитву козаків було запрошено православного священника Української Православної Церкви (Московського патріархату). Козацькі вигуки незгоди та осуду змусили священника залишити приміщення, і провадити спільну молитву довелося гетьманові Біласу. Святкування Покрови та дня Українського Козацтва завершилося урочистим концертом козаків та художніх колективів з різноманітних регіонів України.

"Ukrains'ke Kozatsvo" celebrations on the Holyday Pokrova

Kyiv - The eastern rite Holy day of Pokrova has been celebrated on the 14^th of October for over 1000 years, and traditionally in Ukraine it is regarded as a special commemorative day for Ukrainian Cossacks (Kozaks). In Kyiv this year, in addition to observing the holy day, the leading organisation "Ukrains'ke Kozatsvo" also celebrated the 10^th anniversary of the revival of Ukrainian Cossacks.

On a sunny but chilly day, hundreds of Cossacks from various regions of Ukraine gathered near the monument of Taras Shevchenko and paid their respects to this great Ukrainian poet and charismatic historical figure. Later, Cossack sotni (units of a hundred men) marched to the monuments of Hrushevskyi and Khmenlytskyi, and attended the church service in Mykhaylivskyi Cathedral.

The main celebration of the day took place in the cultural centre "Ukrain’skyi Dim" (Ukrainian House) where Lt.Gen. Ivan Bilas, Hetman of Ukrains’ke Kozatstvo greeted all of the Ukrainian Cossack representatives and decorated the most distinguished with medals. Among those to be decorated and receive Cossack high military ranks were Prime Minister of Ukraine Viktor Yuschenko and President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma. Kuchma was also proclaimed to be an Honourary Hetman of Ukrains’ke Kozatstvo.

A conflict arose during the celebration when an Orthodox priest from the Moscow Patriarchy was invited to bless the gathering. He was shouted down by the rank and file Cossacks and forced to leave. The communal prayer was then conducted by Hetman Bilas himself. The Pokrova celebration ended with concert performances by the Cossacks and various Cossack-related ensembles.
