Ukrainians study international anti-trafficking methods and legislation

Washington, DC - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) offices in Washington DC and Kyiv organized and hosted a 10-day anti-trafficking training course for 14 Ukrainian officials and NGO representatives. The training was part of a study/visit programme that began with a four-day seminar in the Netherlands and ended yesterday in Washington DC. Participants included members of Parliament, experts drafting the new criminal code, high ministry officials, and representatives of women's NGOs providing assistance and involved in combating trafficking.

This training was designed to equip relevant government authorities and NGO leaders with the knowledge and skills to effectively prevent trafficking in women from Ukraine. Participants had opportunities to interact with relevant authorities in the Netherlands and the US to discuss the efforts being made by those countries to prevent trafficking in women. In the development of new strategies to assist victims, the group visited US-based organizations that provide relevant services such as, crisis centers, shelters and hotlines. Participants discussed international law for migrants and residency law, legal protection for victims, and innovative approaches aimed at preventing illegal migration and trafficking of women. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) provided funding for the course.

The IOM Ukrainian training delegation members included:

10. Ms. Geyko, Olena, Zhytomyr Oblast Children Hospital, social teacher, Deputy Head of Zhytomyr Oblast Women's Organization;
11. Ms. Kumpan, Lyudmyla, Kherson branch of Inter-regional Management Academy, social and psychology teacher.
12. Ms. Rosdobudko, Iren, a journalist for the publication "Nadiia";
13. Ms. Sanovska, Viktoriya, Ukrainian State Youth Social Service Center, Head of Social Program Department;
14. Ms. Orzhekhovska Valentyna, Head of the Academy of Pedagogic Sciences Preventive Education Center, Professor, Sci. Doctor;
