Trafficked Ukrainian women rescued in Sarajevo
Washington, DC - On Monday, November 6, the International Organization for Migration (²ÎÌ) office in Sarajevo assisted seven women to return to their home countries. A group of 17 women were rescued from a local nightclub during a police raid last week in Sarajevo. After being questioned by the UN police, 12 women (7 Moldavian, 3 Ukrainian and 2 Romanian) confirmed they were held against their will and asked IOM for assistance to return to their home countries. They were taken to one of IOM's shelters where they were put under armed protection, and provided with accommodation, food, clothing, and medical assistance.
Those who returned were provided with a reintegration grant of US$150. Working with other IOM missions and local NGOs, IOM organized airport assistance to all the trafficked women upon arrival in their home countries. To date IOM Sarajevo has assisted 147 trafficked women coming from Moldova (74), Romania (45), Ukraine (23), Kazakhstan (2), Yugoslavia (2) and Belarus (1).
