EAST HANOVER, N.J. - The New Jersey branch of the Ukrainian Engineers Society of America (UESA) will hold a presentation titled "Communication in the Digital Age", at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2000, at the Ramada Inn on Rt. 10 West, East Hanover, NJ. The featured speakers will be Dr. Leo M. F. Chirovsky and Dr. Yurij Shevchuk, both of Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, and Marco Shmerykowsky, P.E. All UESA members, their guests, and the general public are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. Dr. Chirovsky will speak on "P2I2-VCSELs -- Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers for an Optoelectronic VLSI Technology." This presentation will include a description of semiconductors and their basic properties, the growth of semiconductor crystals, and the basic properties of lasers. These concepts will be the basis of the definition of the generic Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL). The second part of the talk will turn to the main topic, the P2I2-VCSELs, vehicles to the potentially new and revolutionary Optoelectronic VLSI Technolgy. An overview of possible applications for the technology will conclude the talk. Dr. Shevchuk will speak on "Preparing Plastic Optical Fiber for Prime Time (in Data Applications)". Advances in the development of low-loss, high-bandwidth plastic optical fiber, along with new approaches to its use will be described. Mr. Shmerykowsky will speak on "Internet 101: The Basics of the Internet". His presentation will include an overview of the Internet and how it has become a key to communication, as well as a discussion of office Internet policies.
