Washington, D.C - Carlos Pascual was sworn in today in Washington, D.C. as the new U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. Mr. Pascual received the oath of office from the US State Department Chief of Protocol William Keppler. The ceremony took place in the Ben Franklin Room of the US State Department at noon on Friday. Strobe Talbott, acting US Secretary of State, and National Security Advisor Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger both attended the ceremony and spoke to the audience of several hundred guests who gathered to watch the ceremony. Mr. Talbott and Mr. Berger heartily congratulated the new ambassador and spoke highly of his years of government service. Ambassador Pascual, according to Talbott and Berger, is the right man at the right time for the job. Both pledged their total support to the Ambassador as he goes to Ukraine and assumes his new duties. It was also apparent that both officials know Pascual very well and are very pleased to have him in this critical ambassadorship position at this time. After the swearing in ceremony, the new Ambassador personally greeted the well-wishers in the room, among whom were his parents and his wife, Aileen Marshall Pascual. The elder Pascuals fled from Cuba after their son Carlos was born and came to the United States. "I look forward to this opportunity to serve as US Ambassador to Ukraine and believe this is a critical moment for Ukraine in its long struggle to be a strong independent country in charge of its own destiny," Ambassador Pascual said. "What has made America great has been its amazing sense of vision and its ability to make that vision come true. What will make Ukraine great will be its ability to have great vision and to make sure the vision comes true. … Ukraine has a great opportunity before it and the United States will continue to be a strong supporter of Ukraine as it moves forward in its long journey to become a strong, democratic, and prosperous country." Ambassador Pascual will soon be leaving the U.S. to assume his new duties in Ukraine.
