"Virsky - The Spirit Of Ukraine" to be featured by PBS TV Broadcaster WNED
(Channel 17, Cable 18, Buffalo - Toronto)
Public Broadcaster WNED launches their fall season September 7 at 8 p.m.with the colour, rhythm, talent and tradition of the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company in a one hour made-for-television production: "VIRSKY - THE SPIRIT OF UKRAINE".
Speaking from her Toronto "KINOFILM" studio, producer/director Myroslava Oleksiuk-Baker confessed her pleasure. "Of course we are delighted that the incredible and sustained effort required for a project of this nature is being rewarded by recognition from one of North America's premiere arts oriented TV broadcasters."
VIRSKY was chosen by WNED to kick off the season during their annual fall membership drive. "We're honoured to be added to their list of productions, along with such notables as The Three Tenors, Riverdance, and Les Miserables."
A Canadian/Ukrainian co-production, Virsky was filmed in both countries, with stage lighting, and sets, designed in Toronto .
"... an exhilarating display of athleticism and bravura technique showcased in timeless dances that exude the culture, humor and heart of Ukraine" . Terry Tucco, NEW YORK TIMES
Also in the NEW YORK TIMES, Anna Kisselgoff picked the Virsky performance at the New York City Center as one of the top ten dance events of 1998.
Special guest appearances by virtuoso violinist Vasyl Popadiuk and his brother Slavko complement the dancers with a dimension of artistry all of their own. One is particularly spellbound when they "face off" against each other in a unique and breathless 2 1/2 minute marathon of brotherly competition.
To enhance the understanding and appreciation of Ukrainian folk dance for non Ukrainians, the video's creators have masterfully interwoven between the dances, colourful and sensitive visual vignettes which delve into the history, the culture and the spirit of the people.
Virsky - The Spirit of Ukraine airs on WNED-PBS Channel 17, Cable 18 on Thursday, September 7, at 8:00 p.m., 9:30 p.m., and again at 11:30 p.m. and 1:00 am.

If the membership drive is successful using "Virsky" as the drawing card, then, not only will WNED wish to repeat the show on future occasions, but the PBS Network is more likely to take notice as well.
