Shevchenko Scientific Society Meeting, May 2000

New York, N.Y. The 16th General Meeting of the Shevchenko Scientific Society of America (NTSh-A) convened on May 20, 2000 at the Society's headquarters in New York City. Separate morning sessions were held by the sections of history and philosophy (HP) and of the mathematics, physics and technology (MPT), respectively. The former elected new members and then changed its organizational structure by splitting into two sections. One of them is devoted to history, philosophy, theology, pedagogy and psychology, and is headed by Prof. Taras Hunczak The other covers the areas of law, sociology, political science, economics, geography and demography as well as the history and theory of journalism; it is headed by Dr. Martha B. Trofimenko. At the same time the MPT section hosted talks by two guest speakers: Prof. Anna Nagurney of the University of Massachusetts, whose lecture entitled "Networks for Fun and Profit" explored the network structure of economic activity ranging from transportation and communications through finance, and Dr. Oleh Kupchynsky of Lviv, the learned secretary of the NTSh in Ukraine (NTSh-U), who traced the history of the publishing activity at NTSh.

The meeting proper was opened in the afternoon by the NTSh-A president, Prof. Leonid Rudnytzky, who asked the audience to honor the memory of the society's departed members and then introduced Dr. Kupchynsky to the general audience. He in turn greeted the gathering on behalf of the NTSh-U and delivered his second lecture, this time on the history of the Society's contributions to Ukrainian scholarship. There followed the elections to the presidium for the meeting, with Prof. Hunczak and Mr. Volodymyr Baranecky elected as the chairmen. Furthermore, an election was held for the nominating, bylaws, resolution and auditing committees. The last examined the minutes of the 15th General Meeting, which were then approved by the members. Greetings from other NTSh chapters were read.

Reports on their activities for the past three years were presented by each of the outgoing officers, beginning with the president, Prof. Rudnytzky. He was followed by the executive vice president Dr. Larissa M. L. Zaleska Onyshkevych, who had also served as the acting president of NTSh-A during Prof. Rudnytzky’s appointment at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich. Then came the reports by the v. p. and learned secretary Prof. Wolodymyr Stojko and by the v. p. and chief financial officer Dr. Wolodymyr Rak. The latter presented the Society's budget for the coming year. V. p. Prof. Vasyl Markus apprised the audience of the activities of the HP section, which he chaired, and of the progress on the project of the Encyclopedia of the Ukrainian Diaspora (EUD), of which he is the chief editor. The HP section now boasts of 70 full, 20 corresponding and 6 associate members. Dr. Yaroslav Zalipsky informed the assembly about the activities of the Philadelphia chapter of the NTSh. A report of the committee on scholarships and grants was read by Prof. John Fizer, Mr. Mykola Haliv spoke about his diversified and challenging tasks as office manager.

V. p. Prof. Roman Andrushkiw reported both as head of the computer/technology committee and of the MPT section. The latter comprises 18 full, 20 corresponding and 11 associate members; it has its own web page accessible at www.shevchenko.org; it regularly holds meetings and seminars. V. p. Dr. Sviatoslaw Trofimenko offered his account on matters of publicity and scholarly conferences. Dr. Martha Trofimenko spoke about the tasks handled by the bylaws committee, which she heads. Ms. Tania Keis reported as the chair of the library committee. In this area, the most important accomplishment of the last term was the computerization of the NTSh library, the introduction of an electronic catalog and its transfer to the internet.

Following a discussion of the reports, the outgoing governing board was granted an honorable discharge. For the imminent election of a new governing board, the nominating committee, chaired by Prof. John Fizer, presented the members with two slates of candidates -- one headed by Prof. Wolodymyr Stojko and the other, by Dr. Larissa Onyshkevych. Both candidates then addressed the audience, presenting their respective platforms. The subsequent vote by secret ballot resulted in the election of Dr. Onyshkevych and her slate by a score of 53:52.

The newly elected president of the NTSh-A considers the following to be the main objectives of the Society: to maintain its leading role in the field of Ukrainian studies, to provide a forum for member projects in all fields, to attract more young scholars and those from among the recent immigrants, to continue its close cooperation with the NTSh-U, particularly in the area of publishing, and to strengthen its cooperation with other NTSh chapters as well as other scholarly institutions. Internally, the NTSh-A is planning to reinvigorate the work of its sections and committees, to increase the number of scholarly publications both in Ukrainian and in English, to continue to modernize its library and archives, to keep on inviting visiting scholars from Ukraine.

In addition to the president, the new Presidium consists of the following: Prof. Roman Andrushkiw - 1st v.p.; Dr. Sviatoslaw Trofimenko - v.p. and learned secretary; Prof. Anna Procyk v.p.; Prof. Vasyl Markus - v.p. and editor of the EUD; Dr. George Slusarczuk - acting treasurer; editor Olha Kuzmowycz - recording secretary. Furthermore, the governing board comprises the following committee chairs: financial - Dr. Slusarczuk (2 members); law advisory - Dr. Andrij V. R. Szul; membership and graduate outreach - Prof. Daria Dykyj (2 members); press - Prof. Orest Popovych (2 members); chapters and development - Dr. Lubomyr Romankiw; publications - Marta Tarnawsky (9 members); bylaws - Dr. Martha Trofimenko (2 members); institutional liaison - Prof. Myroslava Znayenko (2 members); library and archive - Tania Keis (3 members); scholarships and grants - Prof. Roman Voronka (5 members); computers and technology - Prof. Andrushkiw (5 members); board of auditors - Prof. Rudnytzky (2 members); delegates to the World Council of NTSh - Prof. Andrushkiw and Dr S. Trofimenko; alternates – Prof. A. Procyk and Dr. M. Trofimenko

The following resolutions were adopted by a committee composed of Dr. Onyshkevych, Prof. Oleksa Bilaniuk, Dr. Serhiy Levkiv, Prof. Markus and Prof. Stojko:

1. We, the participants of the 16th General Meeting of the NTSh-A, greet all Ukrainian scholarly and scientific institutions and all Ukrainian scholars and scientists, especially those in Ukraine. Considering the present economic conditions, we encourage all our members to collaborate in joint projects which could help scholars and scientists in Ukraine.

2. Our Assembly greets all national NTSh chapters. We are genuinely happy about the growth and success of NTSh in Ukraine, especially in the area of publishing, and we offer our assurances of continued cooperation and support.

3. Our Assembly supports a continued professional and collegial cooperation of the NTSh-A with scholarly institutions in the Ukrainian diaspora and in Ukraine, as well as with Ukrainian and other Universities which feature Ukrainian studies.

4. Our Assembly expresses its concern about the halt in the proliferation of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine and supports the full rights of Ukrainian as the state language.

5. Our Assembly affirms that the NTSh-A will continue to honor its obligation to promote the work on the Encyclopedia of the Ukrainian Diaspora, so as to bring this important project to completion as soon as possible, and encourages our community to support it.

Відбулися Загальні Збори НТШ в Америці

16-і Загальні Збори Науковго Товариства ім. Шевченка в Америці (НТШ-А) відбулися 20 травня 2000 року у власному домі Товариства в Нью-Йорку. День розпочався діловими сходинами окремих секцій. Історично-філософічна секція (ІФС) провела черговий вибір нових членів. Відтак вона поділилася організаційно на властиву ІФС з такими дисциплінами, як історія, філософія, теологічні науки, педагогіка й психологія та на секцію суспільних наук (ССН), до якої увійшли право, соціологія, політологія, економічні науки, географія і демографія, історія і теорія журналістики. Головою ІФС став проф. Тарас Гунчак, а головою ССН, д-р Марта Б. Трофименко. Першу частину програми засідань збагатили доповіді проф. Анни Нагірної з Массачусетського Університету, яка говорила про "Структури економічних пов'язань та їх пристосування у транспортації, комунікації та фінансах" і гостя зі Львова, заступника голови і наукового сетретаря НТШ в Україні (НТШ-У), проф. Олега Купчинського, якого темою була історія видавничої діяльности в НТШ.

Відтак слідували власитві Збори, що їх відкрив голова НТШ-А проф. Леонід Рудницький. Він закликав присутніх вшанувати пам'ять померлих членів і представив проф. О. Купчинського зі Львова. Останній передав Зборам привітання від НТШ-У і вилосив свою другу доповідь, в якій простежив історію внеску НТШ для української науки. Дальше обрано Президію Зборів, яку очолили проф. Т. Гунчак і мґр. Володимир Баранецький; прийнято порядок нарад, вибрано комісії: номінаційну, статутову, резолюційну і верифікаційну - для перевірки протоклу попердніх Загальних Зборів, який остаточно прийнято; зачитано привіти від інших осередків НТШ-А.

Пристуні заслухали звітів членів Президії уступаючої Управи та голів секцій і комісій про їхню діялність за останніх три роки. Голова проф. Л. Рудницький наголосив на співпраці НТШ-А з НТШ-У в рамках спільних наукових і видавничих проектів, а також інформував про участь НТШ-А в американському і міжнародному науковому світі. Другою звітувала д-р Лариса Залеська Онишкевич, ексекутивний застуних голови (яка також заступала голову від час його праці в Мюнхені) і голова видайничої комісії. Вона підсумувала успіхи видавничої діяльности Товариства, інформувала про участь членів НТШ-А в міжнародних наукових конференціях, про організацію наукових конференцій Товариством, зокрема про спонзорування в Україні правописних конференцій і наукових видань. Дальше про наукову діяльність звітував проф. Володимир Стойко, заступних голови і науковий секретар. А про фінансову, застуник голови і фінансовий діловод, д-р Володимир Рак; останній запропонував бюджет для Товариства на черговий рік. Ві ІФС та про стан видання ЕУД звітував її головний редактор, голова секції та заступник голови НТШ-А, проф. Василь Маркусь. ІФС має сьогодні 70 дійсних членів, 20 кореспондентів і 6 звичайних. Д-р Ярослав Заліпський запізнав присутніх з діяльністю осередку НТШ у Філяделіьфії. Проф. Іван Фізер склав звіт стипендійної комісії. Директор канцеларії НТШ, ред. Микола Галів, поінформував про свою нелегку й вимогливу працю.

У додатку до усних звітів, писемні представили про свою діяльність; проф. Роман Андрушків, заступник голова НТШ-А, у свої ролі як голова і комп'ютерної комісії, і математично-фізично-технічної секції. Ця секція нараховує 18 дійсних членів, 20 кореспондентів і 11 звичайних, має свою сторінку на інтернеті під адресою www.shevcheno.org і єдина, яка реґулярно відбуває свої засідання і доповіді. Про діялність у сфері наукових доповідей, зв'язку і преси звітував заступник голови, д-р Святослав Трофименко; д-р М. Трофименко доповідала про працю статустової комісії, яку вона очолює; про бібліотещну комісію звітувала її голова, мґр. Тетяна Кейс. Найважливішим досягненням у бібліотеці за останню каденцію була її комп'ютеризація, із запровадженням електронного каталогу та перенесенням його на інтернет.

Після дискусій над звітами, Збори уділили абсолюторію уступаючій Управі. Для вибору нової Управи, номінаційна комісія під проводом проф. І. Фізера представила Зборам два списки кандидатів, що з них один очолював проф. В. Стойко, а другий, д-р Л. Онишкевич. Обидва кандидати на голову НТШ-А виголосили тоді свої програмні промови, після яких відбулося тайне голосування. Щлени обрали головою д-р Л. Онишкевих та її список кандидатів до Управи відношенням голосів 53:52.

Нововибрана голова НТШ-А представила свою детальну програму на письмі. Найважливішими цілями НТШ-А є виявити провдну ролю в галузі українознавства, дати членам форум на проєкти в усіх ділянках, притягнути мододих науковців і тих з "щетвертої хвилі", продовжувати тісну співпрацю з НТШ-У, зокрема у видавничій галузі, посилити співпрацю з іншими осередками НТШ та іншими науковими установами. У своїй внутрішній діяльності, НТШ-А плянує відновити працю секцій і комісій, збільшити наукові видання українською та англійською мовами, дальше модернізувати бібліотеку й архіви, запрошувати гостей-науковців з України.

До Президії нової Управи увійшли, крім голови: проф. Р. Андрушків - 1-ший заст. голови; д-р С. Трофименко - заст. голови і науковий секретар; проф. Анна Процик і проф. В. Маркусь - заст. голови; д-р Юрій Слюсарчук - в.о. скарбника; ред. Ольга Кузьмович - протоколярний секретар. Головами комісій стали: фінансової - д-р Ю. Слюсарчук (2 члени); правничої - д-р Андрій Шуль; членства - проф. Даріа Дика (2 члени); преси - проф. Орест Попових (2 члени); осередків - д-р Любомир Романків; видавничої - мґр. Марта Тарнавська (9 членів); статутової - д-р М. Трофименко (2 члени); зв'язків з науковими установами - проф. Мирослава Знаєнко (2 члени); бібліотечної - мґр. Т. Кейс (2 члени); стипендійної - проф. Роман Воронка (4 члени); ком'пютерної - проф. Р. Андрушків (5 членів); контрольної - проф. Л. Рудницький (4 члени); делеґати до Світової Ради НТШ - проф. Р. Андрушків і д-р С. Трофименко, заступники - проф. А. Процик і д-р М. Трофименко.

Резолюційна комісія в складі: д-р Л. Онишкевич, проф. Олекса Біланюк, д-р Сергій Левків, проф. В. Маркусь і проф. В. Стойко, випрацювала і прогосила на письмі ось такі Резолюції:

РЕЗОЛЮЦІЇ 16-их ЗАГАЛЬНИХ ЗБОРІВ НАУКОВОГО ТОВАРИСТВА ім. ШЕВЧЕНКА (НТШ) В АМЕРИЦІ

20-го травня 2000 р. в Нью Йорку

1. Загальні Збори вітають усі українські наукові установи і всіх українських науковців у світі, зокрема в Україні. Беручи до уваги сьогоднішні економічні обставини, Збори звохочують усіх членів до співпраці у спільних наукових проектах, які допомогли б науковцям в Україні.

2. Збори вітають усі крайові НТШ. Учасники Зборів щиро радіють зі зростання та успіхів НТШ в Україні, зокрема видавничих, і висловлюють запевнення в нашій дальшій співпраці і підтримці.

3. Збори підтримують дальшу ділову і дружню співпрацю НТШ в Америці з науковими установами української діяспори та України та з українськими та іншими університетами світу, які займаються україністикою.

4. Збори висловлюють стурбованість призупинанням поширання української мови в Україні та підтримують повні права української мови як державної.

5. Збори підтверджують, що НТШ в Америці далі зобов'язується сприяти праці на Енциклопедією Української Діяспори, щоб якнайшвидше зкінчити цей важливий проєкт, і заохочують громаду його підтримати.
