Rocking the boat: "Eneida" a la Kharkiv
Just over 200 years ago, poet and playwrite Ivan Kotliarevky broke new ground in the arts by publishing his epic poem "Eneida," a parody of Virgil's classic masterpiece "Aenead." The publication earned its unique place in the world of literature among other things because of its first time use of vernacular Ukrainian as a "literary" language. Today, new ground is being broken yet again by performances of "Eneida," brought to these shores by a Kharkiv-based theater troupe called "Arabesky." This fresh interpretation of the Kotliarevsky epic offers a level of energy, movement, and drama that draws the audience into the action taking place onstage. The charateristic liveliness and depth of the production is reflected in the images in the side panel. "Eneida" was staged on Saturday, March 18, 2000 at the Derzhavnytskiy Front in New York City. After "Eneida," the New York audience was treated to an entertaining series of children's poems, "Favorite Poems," enjoyed by all ages. Sponsoring organizations included the Ukrainian National Association, NYC branches of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, and Smoloskyp Publishing. The members of the theater group also expressed their gratitude to Marian Kots, Osyp Zinkevych and Mr. And Mrs. Bachynsky for making this tour a reality. In addition to New York City, performances have already taken place in Kerhonkson, NY, Hartford and New Haven, CT. Check the schedule below for tour appearances in other cities around the country.
