We often ask ourselves, how many of us, Ukrainians that is, there are in America. The answer that is returned varies widely – some say more than a million, others say a few hundred thousand. How many are there really? The only correct answer to this question will be known if we all participate in Census 2000.

514,085 persons of Ukrainian ancestry were counted in the U.S. 1990 Census.

Participation is crucial and not merely formality, otherwise we Ukrainians shall be ignored and remain uncounted in the national records. Taking part in the census affords us an opportunity to prove the existence of a large community of Ukrainians and Ukrainian-Americans.

The U.S. Federal Government distributes 100+ billion dollars among community groups for their special needs. This financial assistance can be used for the building of schools, development of the arts, medical help and even for professional purposes. In other words, we can improve the overall living conditions of our Ukrainian communities. There is no reason whatsoever not to participate when participation can only lead to the greater success and happiness of all Ukrainians in this country.

This is especially important for the recent immigrants to this country. If you are living in the U.S., regardless of whether or not you are a citizen, you should take part in the census. Do not be indifferent to your own welfare!

Your responses to the questions on the census form are strictly confidential and will not be shared with any other agencies, government or otherwise. Not even the President of the United States is allowed to see the questionnaire responses until 72 years have passed.

Fill in and mail the Census 2000 questionnaire. It promises a better future for us all!

PS – Taking into account that many in our communities do not have Internet access, we ask that our readers help to disseminate this information as widely as possible. Be sure to remind your parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren – all your relatives, neighbors and friends. Send notices for announcements to local publications, newspapers, magazines and radio stations. Churches would be performing an exceptional civic service by sharing this announcement to their parishioners. Community organizations should take a lead in encouraging their members to participate. Then we will know for certain how many of us of Ukrainian heritage we are.

Ми часто запитуємо один одного скільки нас, українців, є в Америці, мається наувазі США. І у відповідь чуємо: oдні кажуть - більше мільйона, другі кажуть - кількасот тисяч. А скільки ж насправді? На це запитання можна буде дати відповідь якщо ми приймемо активну участь в переписі населення США 2000 року

Це не проста формальність яку треба виконати, або можна нею знехтувати. Прийнявши участь в переписі населення ми маємо нагоду в повний голос заявити про існування великої української громади. Федеральний уряд США кожен рік розподіляє між національними громадами понад 100 мільярдів долярів для їх потреб. Фінансова допомога уряду може бути використана для розбудови наших шкіл, на розвиток національного мистецтва, на покращення медичного забезпечення, а також на освоєння нової професії. Іншими словами, ми можемо покращити життя всієї нашої української громади. Не залишайтеся осторонь цієї важливої справи, коли участь кожного може принести щастя і радість всім нам.

Ваші відповіді є конфіденційними і вони неможуть передаватися ні до яких інших державних установ.

Особливо наголошуємо для новоприбулих емігрантів. Якщо ви живети в США, то незалежно від вашого громадянства ви повинні прийняти участь в переписі населення. Не будьте байдужими до самих себе.

Заповніть і вишліть поштою анкету перепису населення 2000 року. Це покращить наше майбутнє.

P.S. Беручи до уваги, що на даний час багато людей з нашої громади не користуються послугами інтернету ми просимо вас якомога ширше розповсюдити цю інформацію. Залучіть до поширення інформації і участі в переписі населення ваших дітей і внуків. Зверніться до місцевих видань газет і журналів, до місцевих українських радіостанцій. Буде дуже корисно коли свяшенники українських церков прилучаться до поширення такої важливої для всіх нас інформації. Неповинні бути осторонь і лідери всіх громадських, наукових, професійних та інших об’єднань українців в Америці. Тоді нaпевно ми будемо знати скільки ж нас - українців.
