  • Washington, March 14, 2000 -- The coal mine disaster that occurred on March 11, 2000 in the city of Krasnodon in eastern Ukraine tragically took the lives of more than 80 miners. Krasnodon is located in an economically depressed area where many miners have not been paid for months.

The accident has left over 125 children, of whom 71 are under the age of 15, fatherless.

The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to building peace and prosperity through shared democratic values for both nations, has a special relationship with Krasnodon since a community partnership was established between Krasnodon and Birmingham, Alabama in 1998 through the Foundation's Community Partnerships Project, a program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation would now like to help the mining families in Krasnodon at this hour of their great need. Financial gifts to the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation are being accepted for this purpose. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Please make your check out to the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation/mine disaster. Your gift is fully tax-deductible as provided by law.

Your donation can be sent to:
