The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is pleased to present Surface Impressions, a group show presenting work by Christine Basick, Guy Benson and Jessica Gondek of Chicago as well as Vladimir Zabeida of Montreal. Concern with the quality of a surface, whether it is a painting or print, a spatial formula or organic texture, links these five artists. Although their approaches veer from tight geometric configuration to warm and heavily worked surfaces, they share a concern with charging the picture plane and developing compositions of rigor and energy.
Christine Basick received her MFA from the University of Chicago and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute. She has exhibited locally at such venues as Artemisia, The Beverly Art Center, The Quincy Art Center and Gallery 312. Guy Benson received his MFA from Tulane University, and his BFA from the University of Florida. He is represented by the Sonia Zaks Gallery in Chicago and Leedy Voulkos Gallery in Kansas City. Jessica Gondek received her MFA from Washington University in St Louis, and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute. She has been the recipient of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts grant, as well as a Mid-America Arts Alliance-National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Award in Painting. Vladimir Zabeida studied and worked with Master Printers at the LithoSTUDIO of the Union of Visual Artists in Lviv, Ukraine, as well as at the Lviv National Art Institute and Lviv National Art College. He has been a resident of Canada since 1991.
The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA), a not for profit arts organization, was founded in 1971. For over 29 years UIMA has served the local community and greater Chicago area with a program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and multi-disciplinary events. The programs presented by UIMA are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
