Gogol Bordello - Not quite your mother's polka band
– fotos by A. Sawaryn
NEW YORK - Billed as "Ukrainian Cabaret punk", the band Gogol Bordello performed at Joe's Pub at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in downtown Manhattan last Friday (Feb. 11, 2000). Gogol has been in the U.S. for two years and recently released their first CD titled Voi-la Intruder.
Lead singer, Eugene Hutz, appeared on stage attired in jacket and tie in the top photo on the left. You can see him in various stages of undress as the evening progressed by following the images down the line.
The repertoire of songs appears to be a compilation of translations from (probably) Ukrainian lyrics. The group sings in thickly accented English, and the style is an odd mixture of Tom Wait-like influences with strong elements of traditional Ukrainian kolomeika music.
