Bread With Honey: An Evening of Dance and Music is a dance and music event directed and choreographed by Katja Pylyshenko Kolcio, Ph.D. in collaboration with musicians Julian Kytasty and Alex Kytasty, making its premier in New York City. The result is an evening of dance and music that pays respect to traditional and ancient forms by using them as source material in the creation of a modern dance event. During the one hour event you will hear traditional Slavic instruments playing old and new melodies, augmented electronically and mixed with voices from the past. Dancers weave through these melodies with full bodied modern dance movement— alternating forceful resilience with calm lightness, flailing recklessly at times, deliberately at others, shaping a presence which combines ancient and timeless patterns with a modern awareness. The dances explore a range of emotional states, from comfort and belonging, to the awkward dissonance that can result when images of one's heritage fuse with the reality of modern American life.

At the beginning and end of the event the audience members will be welcomed with traditional Ukrainian hospitality to enjoy "zakusky" (hors d’oeuvres) and to observe an installation dance—a series of moving situations—taking place in an alcove off the lobby.
KATJA PYLYSHENKO KOLCIO'S work in dance explores how personal experience is structured in performance. Her choreography has been funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Arts and Cultural Council of Greater Rochester, the New York State Legislature as well as by numerous smaller community businesses and organizations. She has presented her choreography at New York University, St. Marks Church, Antioch College, SUNY at Brockport, The Martin Luther King Jr. Arts and Cultural Complex in Columbus, Ohio, the Dayton Cultural Arts Festival, the Georgia Museum of Art among other venues across the country.
JULIAN KYTASTY is recognized as one of today’s leading performers on the bandura, a traditional Ukrainian musical instrument. A third generation bandura player, he combines a mastery of traditional repertoire and styles with an openness to contemporary influences. He is the Music Director of the New York Bandura Ensemble and performs frequently as a soloist and with groups including the Experimental Bandura Trio, Staroviry, Paris to Kyiv, and the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus.
ALEX KYTASTY is a sound designer and electronic musician who has worked in both theater and dance in New York City. He also performs with the ethno-electronic ensemble Staroviry.
