Collage - a musical kaleidoscope

Collage - a musical ensemble from Lviv, Ukraine, has both a bright future and an already proven legacy! In three short years the group has recorded and released three CDs and cassettes from their wide-ranging repertoire. In addition, they have been featured on Ukrainian television, participated in the music festival "Jugendfestspieltreffen" in Bayreuth, and completed a twenty-city tour of Germany. Testaments of their artistry can be taken from newspaper reviews:

"Brilliant musicianship..."
-
Nordbayerische Kurier
"Uncompromising high standards..."
-
Templiner Zeitung
"Loyal fans from different places seek out their performances..."
-
Norbayerische Kurier

The group’s reknown and success is easily attributed to:

-- the group's repertoire

Cellist Halyna Zhuk, the group's leader, meticulously selects pieces for each of their concerts. Having over sixty diverse works in their core repertoire, the ensemble is comfortable performing in concert halls and churches, as well as in smaller venues. Popular works easily coincide with those which are lesser known, light-hearted with those which are tragic. The works of Ukrainian composers are featured along with the ensemble’s own arrangements of other pieces. This sort of variety captures the imagination and attention of audiences everywhere.

-- the ensemble (core) members

Sophia Soloviy – international prize-winning soprano. Her enchanting voice and strong interpretive skills both with operatic arias as well as non-operatic material engages everyone in the audience.

Serhiy Lutsenko - virtuoso flutist. The ensemble's sound is unique because it's lead instrumental voice is held by a woodwind cast in a string setting. This unusual element offers warmth and added expression to the performances.

Yuri Voitynskyi – violinist. Yuri is an associate concertmaster at the Ivan Franko Lviv Opera Theatre in Ukraine.

Pavlo Zavialov - viola. Though still completing his studies, Zavialov demonstrates himself to be a serious and committed musician.

Halyna Zhuk – is an accomplished cellist and laureate of international chamber music competitions. She is a permanent member of the Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra.

NEW YORK - In a little heralded concert that took place recently in Newark, NJ, the musical ensemble "Collage" from Lviv, Ukraine, brought the house down with applause and praise. St. John the Baptist Church with it's bright, cheerful and inspiring interior, was the perfect venue for this ensemble's music. The acoustics enjoined with the beautiful sounds from the instruments of the talented players and the phenomenal singing voice of soprano Sophia Solovyi turned the afternoon event into a memorable experience for all who attended.

The excellent acoustics and cheerful atmosphere of St. John the Baptist Church lent exactly the right ambience for a joyful experience.

The location for the concert was highly unusual in that it took place in the church itself -- uncommon to say the least, possibly even never before heard of in a Ukrainian Catholic church. In the words of Father Bohdan Lukie, pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, "What better way to celebrate the birth of Christ than with beautiful music?" And, indeed, the combination of the musicianship and spiritual atmosphere created a almost magical aura that reached to the very depths of one's soul.

Surrounded by the Christmas decor of the church, Collage performed "koliadky" (carols) and classical compositions that evoked powerful emotional responses from the audience.

The group is currently on tour in the US, and was brought here from Lviv by Kateryna Nemyra of "Svitlysia," a Cleveland based arts center. Ms. Nemyra herself fairly recently immigrated to the United States and has taken a keen interest in helping to promote young talent from Ukraine in this country. She feels that the exposure to Western music, and lifestyle as well, is critical for creative development.
