The Legal Profession
in Ukraine (Essay)
Most Western lawyers erroneously assume that the legal profession
in Ukraine is similar to that of the United States. This article was written
by the Myroslaw Smorodsky in March of 1991 and published by the Ukrainian-American
Bar Association (UABA) for its members and discusses the various aspects
and distinctions within the Ukrainian legal community. The author was the
then president of the UABA. Although substantial changes have occurred
in Ukraine in the interim, the observations and comments contained in this
article are, to a large degree, still valid.
